About the Artist

Born in Scotland, James Shields began drawing at an early age, studying everyday household shapes such as teapots and kettles, as well as the more fleeting colours and shapes reflected in the flames and smoke of an open fire.

He began painting seriously in the mid 1960's, initially influenced by the traditional landscapes of Farquharson and De Breanski.

After almost two decades painting traditional landscape and still life he became drawn to the work of the Scottish Colourists as well as artists such as MacLaughlin Milne and Alberto Morrocco who had a broader and freer approach to painting.

During the late 1980's, he began to implement changes in his work which became more colourful and less dependent on form. At this time he met Alistair Maitland, an eminent Scottish artist who had emigrated to Canada in the 1940's and who became a major influence in James's interpretation of the landscape.

James draws his subject matter from the milieu of modern life and is at one with the marriage of the natural environment and the hand of man upon it. Artistic influences aside he has developed a fluid and mature style which generates a certain vibrancy and distinctiveness through the use of colour.

Today he devotes his time to painting and developing his relationship with nature's elements.
